Sunglasses

Someone on here got me thinking about the color of my lenses on my Ocean Waves. I have blue lenses which are perfect for deep water ocean fishing. I have read about gray, amber and green lenses. I can understand amber being good for low light conditions or early in the morning but I don't get all the other colors. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
Frambo: The latest coastal angler has an article on this subject. Interestingly, Kirk has an article in there as well but that is another story.
- Gray lenses dull colors (color helps spotting fish I.E. RED)
- Vermillion, Rose or copper (Enhances reds)
- Amber and Brown are also good for the flats.
Ive got a pair of copper coyote's that are photochromic which are not to dark when the brightness fades...they work pretty good

I've got a pair of Costa Del Mar 580 glass lens (Man O' War style) in green that gives me great contrast on the water. When we go out together remind me and I'll pack a pair of Bolle with a sandstone color glass lens (think copper/tan/brown) that also provide great contrast. While we're out on the water you can also try my Costas and compare them all to see what you think. A few years ago I stepped up and bought the Bolle and I was amazed at the difference in vision compared to cheaper polarized lenses that were supposedly the right contrast. It's funny because you hear people talking about Costas, Ocean Waves, Smith Action Optics, and Maui Jim and you don't hear much about Bolle, but I like them. For lens color I'm not a big fan of vermilion and I stick to a green or copper color. I also completely agree that the blues and grey lenses cut too much color and make it hard to spot fish.

I sport the Costa Del Mar Triple Tails...I love them and feel Costa is an awesome company to work with...they have lifetime gaurentee...also if something happenens to them...like my logos fell off after 4 years of wearing them everyday, I sent them in and got a brand new pair back. I use the blue lens because I do all kinda of fishing from inshore...to offshore...to bass...to ice-fishing...to whatever fishing has not been invented yet. I have a buddy who has two pairs of costas and wears the green lens when we are inshore fishing. The only complaints I have ever heard from costa was that if they ever have to send in their glasses to get fixed that they take forever to get them back. However I just called them up and told them I had a fishing trip coming up and needed them asap...so they told me I was getting a new pair anyway and for an extra $10 they would overnight them from me...not many companies will do this...trust me...I have tried.

I love my Costa Wave's but be forewarned that repairs are costly............I did a Homer and broke a lens in my carry on luggage last year and it was $90 to replace it. If you have expensive sunglasses=====use the case and use the strap provided :-)
Frambo:
This site has some killer prices on Bolle and coyote as well as many others. I have some script Bolles and love them but recently got some coyotes. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?allwords=polarized&searchdescriptions=True
If you sign up for their specials, you will get 20% off coupons with some frequency...The last item I picked up was normally near a 100 bucks everywhere else and was purchased for around 25...

I got lucky...my logos fell off and the paint was scraping off from dropping them so much and it was $9 to send it and the extra $10 to have it overnight to me.
WildBill:
Isn't Costa Del Mar in Daytona Beach? Wonder if they sell glasses wholesale? I've heard a lot of good things about them. Hopefully with the gift cards I get from BPS I can pick up a new pair of something. Thanks for the info!
edlive96:
Good thread, I need to get me a pair... I'm new at sight fishing so I'm sure a good pair of polarized sunglasses will make you turn around back to the house if you forget em.
HelRazor:
Of all the equipment we use to fish, my advice to anyone getting started is to focus your total fishing budget on the sunglasses. There are many brands and you can do like I did by buying them, testing them, and returning the ones you don't like, but they are certainly worth the investment. Don't make the same mistake I did: I wasted too much time on the water looking through cheap lenses and missing the details.
