Every month we hold a meeting with a guest speaker to Share their knowledge, tips and techniques to engage our club members. They have covered subjects ranging from kayaking technique, conservation, instructions on using specific lures and retreival techniques all the way to the methods to locate predatory fish in our lagoon system
We have had many guest speakers such as Jon Cave from the International Fly Fishing School, Terri from Kel's Rod & reel repair, Captain's Chris Cameron, Tom Van Horn, Chris Myers, Jim Ross, Alex Gorichky, Rodney Smith, Don McCumber, T.J. Bettis, Chad Roberts of the Marine Discovery center, Todd Vivian of Mudhole, Rick from the Snook Foundation, Rod Price with the Friends of the Wekiva, Mary Carswell the kayak instructor amongst many, many many others.
Before the seminars we always cover a few club topics and also introduce any new club members. We finish the meetings with a free-for-all chaos of simultaneous fishing discussions.
We also feature events such as the Kayak Swap picnic, Clean-up of the Merritt Island refuge, Swan Round-up and Offshore Yak experience, Bio-luminescence outings, etc.
Typically this will involve signing up on the events page by clicking on the sign-up link once we open registration. Some of the events are very popular so signing up early guarantees you a spot. Please do not sign-up unless you know you can attend.
All club activities are free and we ask that club members participate in the pot-luck lunches. We usually have access to a grill and chaffing dishes to heat and keep food Hot as well as coolers to keep drinks cold.

Greg Stamer is a seasoned Kayaker who has Circumnavigated Greenland and Iceland with a particular passion for Greenland style paddling. He is the past-President and founder of Qajaq USA, the American Chapter of the Greenland Kayaking Association.
Greg will be sharing stories with a slide presentation about his kayaking experiences in Newfoundland and Greenland. He will also bring the kayak type that was used for his Newfoundland trip.
Born in 1960, Greg Stamer grew up paddling open canoes but was instantly captivated by sea kayaks and got his start in 1988. Home is wherever he happens to be, but central Florida is his home base.
A minimalist by nature, Greg was attracted to Greenland-style kayaking and began learning Greenland skills in the late eighties.
Greg participated on the first American team, when the annual Greenland Kayaking Championship was opened to outsiders in 2000. He won his age group in the World Class (which combined all Greenlanders and foreigners), and earned medals in different disciplines, including long distance racing and rolling. Greg returned again in 2002 and earned another gold medal for rolling. While there he enjoyed kayaking in several locations along the Southwest Greenland coast in a traditional skin covered kayak; “The Greenlandic coast and fiords are truly soul-inspiring in their beauty. Works of man are few, and the immense landscape both humbles and empowers you at the same time”.
Greg has pursued multi-week trips in many locations, including the Pukaskwa coast of Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands, circumnavigating Isle Royale in Lake Superior, portaging his sea kayak across Isle Royale (to fish the inland lakes and to hear wolves and see moose), exploring the coastal areas of the Florida Everglades, and more.
In June 2007 Greg and Freya Hoffmeister circumnavigated Iceland (1,620 km) in 33 days (25 paddling days), a record and in June 2008 Greg circumnavigated Newfoundland solo (2,102 km) in 44 days (35 paddling days), a record.

Many in the club will hit the water early for some fishing and return to the shores to tackle the banks. Parking is plenty at the end of the road with some nice sandy launch spots.

The Swan round-up is an annual event that began in 2007. The OKFC has participated every year since then in the month of the November.
The Swans were first brought to Lake Eola in the late 1900's. They have been left to themselves until 2007. As a symbol of Orlando, the city took them under their protection and wanted to give them annual medical examinations and vaccinations. The city of Orlando had also decided to import other species from across the world and add to the lake to create a sanctuary for these majestic birds.
There are now five species of swans at Lake Eola: Black - Australia, Mute - England/Europe, Whooper - Russia/Japan, Finland/ Europe, Black Necked - South America and Trumpeter - North America
Previous participants will be contacted 30 days prior to this event first. We will need a minimum of 30 Kayakers.
