DOA Chug Head
« on: January 24, 2009, 11:11:56 AM »
I need some help! I love the concept of these Chug Head's, turn one way, it's a soft topwater popper. Turn the other way it's a soft diving swim bait.

Does anyone have any experience with these? I cannot get the hook in them and the soft plastic correctly. I have thought about adding a drop of super glue to the tip of the soft plastic before inserting into the head, but have not done it yet.

I've got a bunch of them also and have not had any luck whatsoever with them  >:(  I'm curious to see if that is what MikeW was using yesterday with his Red  ???

Bill,

I have some and I don't like them. They are not the easiest bait
to get to chug and skip across the surface correctly.
Rod choice and tip action all play an important role in making these
baits work right. Plus, as you've found out, they are a PITA to rig
correctly to swim right.

I have also been using the "Hot Heads" (see my last NMZ post)
and like those a lot more. They don't impart any action or splash
but they do allow you to add color contrast and eyes to any soft plastic
bait.

The easiest way to rig either the chug or hot head is using a Mustad Powerlock
weedless hook. The spike allows you to easily position the head on straight
and you just push it in. The other hook I use is DOA Long Neck jerkbait hooks
in 3.5/0 size. Mark Nichols has these especially made up specifically for
use in the CAL series. They have an extra long shank portion that allows
the heads to be rigged correctly.

Thanks Mike! I saw your post and I like those too. I just love using topwater poppers or "walk the dog" style baits early in the morning! I bet those powerlocks would do the trick. I'll go get some and try 'em out!

Thanks all!
